A historic Cumbrian brewery has been acquired by two business owners, with the Shrewsbury office of Towler Shaw Roberts handling the sale of the Castle Brewery in Cockermouth.

West Cumbrian couple Kurt and Rebecca Canfield have completed the purchase of the historic and iconic former Jennings brewery, which is now set to reopen as a working brewery.

The property features an extensive complex of inter-connecting buildings, extending in total to 63,125 sq ft, within a total site area of 1.73 acres (0.7 hectares) occupying a prime location in the centre of Cockermouth and fronting the River Cocker.

Following the closure of the brewery in 2022, TSR were instructed to market the property inviting offers in excess of £750,000 for the freehold interest.

Toby Shaw, a partner at TSR, handled the sale.

He said: “We are pleased to have successfully completed a sale to Kurt and Rebecca Canfield and wish them every success moving forward with their new venture.

“It is great news for the local community that the brewery will now reopen.

“The brewery is a landmark property, an iconic building steeped in history, that occupies an excellent location near Cockermouth town centre.

“The site and premises were developed by Jennings Brewery, who occupied the site from 1874, having identified the location to take advantage of the abundant supply of pure Lakeland water drawn from the brewery’s own well.

“It continued to be used as a commercial brewery after being purchased by Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company until its closure in 2022.

“There was significant interest in the property because of its iconic nature and the history that goes with it.”

Mr Shaw added: “As a firm, we are now handling a number of properties nationwide having developed a strong and well-respected reputation over a number of years, with the Castle Brewery in Cumbria being another example.”
